“A wonderfully nostalgic experience – a journey back to holidays of my childhood”
I would highly recommend Pension Getaria to anyone who wants to relive the feel of holidays in Spain and continental Europe during the 1960s and 1970s. The dark wooden paneling, tiled floors and narrow twin beds all evoke a bygone era, giving a level of authenticity that many modern places fail to capture. Those worried about environmental sustainability will feel reassured to learn that soap and shampoo are thoughtfully supplied in individual disposable sachets, and the plastic drinking cups can be discarded after a single use. Although we stayed when outdoor temperatures were modest at 15–20 °C, I suspect the experience would be even more authentic in July or August, when the lack of air conditioning might let guests enjoy indoor temperatures reminiscent of Mediterranean summers before modern climate control. For the full experience, I would also suggest trying to make a hot drink in your room. Hot water can be obtained from the owner, but guests should remember to bring their own tea, coffee and preferably a suitable drinking vessel. Perhaps the establishment’s greatest achievement is its remarkable resistance to the passage of time. With seemingly little pressure from local competition, there is every reason to hope that the character of the accommodation will remain largely undisturbed by modernisation for many years to come. It’s a rare chance to discover how little holiday accommodation needs to change over half a century.
