Sinharaja Rest

We had such a lovely time at Sinharaja Rest; the staff were absolutely amazing and the food was delicious. They were very kind, and the tours were great. We went with Kumar, who excelled at birdwatching, and we also did a day and night walk. We enjoyed them all. The owner gave us a lift to the bus station in Deniyaya when we left. Many thanks. Nothing – everything was good.

If you’re heading to Sinharaja Forest, stay close to the entrance—it makes everything much easier. Everything is old and poorly maintained. Even the main door doesn’t close properly, the bathroom is in bad shape, and there’s no hot water. The host is unreliable. He told me on the phone that dinner would cost 500 LKR for rice and curry, but the bill came to 2,750 LKR. The place is far from both the entrance and the town center. There are no restaurants nearby and basically no public transport, so you’re forced to rely on the host for meals and transport. Even the house’s tuk‑tuk driver tried to convince me that there was no bus to my next destination so I would take his tuk‑tuk instead, but a bus was actually available an hour later.

A beautiful accommodation with a stunning view! The breakfast and dinner were super tasty. Nelum gave us excellent advice and recommended a very friendly and competent guide (Kumara) for the rainforest trek.
