“Lovely setting in older Ryokan. Excellent Japanese meals”
The mountain setting was beautiful, the place was quiet, and there were several onsens. Dinner and breakfast featured many small dishes to enjoy. The owner speaks very limited English and there are no English instructions anywhere in the ryokan. Using the onsens required picking up wooden tags marked with Kanji that didn’t seem to match the onsen doors. The area has many stinkbugs that can’t be avoided, and a few ended up in the room—just pick them up with a tissue and flush them. Don’t open the windows or more will come in. Getting there by bus from Tokyo was a bit of a challenge; most guests arrive by car. From Shinjuku Bus Terminal, reserve a Nohi Bus to direct to Hirayu Onsen station, then catch the Nohi bus up to Yakedaki bus stop number H59. I recommend taking the bus up to the ropeway, but call for a reservation the day before. No reservation is needed for the return bus.
