We spent three nights at Palazzo Bernardini, the only guests in the building. Two men handled cleaning and management, but we barely saw them, and the proprietor was unexpectedly away; we never met her, only corresponded. The breakfast we had expected never materialised, so we were given vouchers for a nearby café. When we asked the palazzo for coffee, they couldn’t provide it. On the bright side, we had full access to the palazzo, which is filled with centuries‑old artifacts and every wall in every room is covered in artwork. If the proprietor had been present, the experience would have been very different, especially since she couldn’t meet our single request to have coffee in the residence.

The Wi‑Fi worked, but the bathroom was far too small for both me and my wife; we couldn’t fit in the shower and the sink was cracked. The whole bathroom was dirty, the shower was black with mould, and there was a strong sewage smell. The bedroom and bathroom were outdated and needed modernisation. There was too much furniture and magazines in the room, and the lighting was poor both day and night. Most alarmingly, there were no smoke detectors or alarms in the rooms or communal areas, and no emergency exit procedure was displayed. The house was packed with hundreds of books and magazines, making it a potential fire hazard. The owner/manager left the country on the second day and gave us tokens for a local café to get breakfast; at that café we could only buy one cup of coffee and one pastry with the token, even though we had paid for breakfast each day. When the manager left, we noticed that all the photocopies of the guests’ passports were left on a table in the communal area, fully visible to everyone—a clear breach of data protection.

Everything was perfect—a unique experience living in a palazzo in the best location in Lecce’s historic centre, with a living history. Our room had a balcony overlooking the duomo, a super quiet street, and parking inside the property. The bathroom was newly renovated by Isabella, the owner, who attended to every detail, was affectionate, concerned about every guest’s preferences, and offered exquisite breakfast, tailoring it to each guest’s tastes. The place was incredible, and sharing it with people from other countries was amazing. Huge thanks to Isabella! Those three days in Lecce at Palazzo Bernardini were a luxury. There were no negatives.

The place was wonderfully furnished in an antique style, with large rooms in a quiet, central location. It was a very enjoyable experience and highly recommended for those who appreciate that style.
