I didn’t like the steep steps leading up to my room – they were too many for someone with limited mobility, and there were even more steps inside the bedroom. When I tried to book breakfast, the girl behind the bar had no idea how to take the order. My room was next to a busy road, which kept me awake for a while at night.

The room and bathroom were good‑sized, clean, and up to scratch. Because of train delays I arrived after 9 pm, cold and hungry, and was told the kitchen closed at 8 pm with no food offered, not even a sandwich. The room sat above a busy road and the window wouldn’t close; I had to ask staff to close it, but it stayed open when I returned. Cars and lorries drove past all night, leaving me with only about 30 minutes of sleep. I went downstairs hungry for breakfast, only to be told there was none and that I should have ordered it the night before, as the same staff member had told me the night before that there was no dinner or supper. She also suggested walking 20–30 minutes to the nearest town for food, even though I had no car. The service was shocking and the night was terrible; I cancelled the second night of my two‑night booking and haven’t been refunded yet.

The Corner Rooms were easy to locate, and the free car park was generous. The staff were very friendly, and my room was comfortable, spotless, and fully equipped. Tea and coffee facilities were excellent, and the biscuits never ran out. I dined at the Black Horse Inn for lunch and dinner, and the food was nicely cooked and presented, with a good variety of menu options. The outdoor area for guests is lovely, partly covered, and the staff really went out of their way to make the experience welcoming. On the downside, a proper coffee after dinner would have been nice but wasn’t available. The stairs to the accommodation are extremely steep and the steps are shallow, making it hard to move luggage up and down.
