“Beautiful apartment in a beautiful town. You need to be clearer, upfront, about check in procedures”
The apartment is in a great location, right within the walls and a short walk from all restaurants. The facilities are very good; it’s a newly renovated apartment with a very comfortable King Suite bed and it’s a great base for exploring Volterra. Check‑in was stressful. We had told them our arrival time, as requested, and called when we arrived at the front door, but communication was tricky because we didn’t speak Italian and the gentleman who answered had no English. The front door was open and the key to the King Suite was in the door, so we assumed he meant it was okay to enter since no one came to greet us. Later that evening we received messages on WhatsApp and several calls from two different numbers. We’d already gone out to dinner and no one had come to the apartment for the previous couple of hours, so we didn’t know there was a problem. When we returned that evening, we had more calls until around 11 pm and it turned out we shouldn’t have entered and we needed to go to the family restaurant to complete check‑in. The result was a stressful evening with several incoherent conversations until we finally spoke with someone who had some English. All of that could have been avoided if they had made it clear (on a message, preferably using just one platform where Google Translate could have been used) to let us know the proper procedure. It was no use to keep “telephone … telephone … telephone” (the words used by the owner the next morning at the restaurant, when it felt like we were getting a ‘telling off’) if we didn’t understand each other’s language! This didn’t spoil our stay but it has never happened at any other place we’ve visited, and it looks like it isn’t the first time it’s happened here. If we had been told in advance to go to the restaurant for check‑in, we would have gone.
