“it was fine. had difficulty with luggage and stairs in main building.”
The staff were nice, but the main building’s stairs are really steep for older guests.

Located in Coupeville, Captain Whidbey is a historic 1907 property offering a non-smoking environment, library, and bicycle rentals. Guests enjoy free Wi-Fi, 24-hour front desk, and on-site restaurant and bar. The hotel is within 10 minutes of Fort Ebey State Park and 20 minutes from the Port Townsend Ferry, providing easy access to Port Townsend, a 1-hour drive away.

We adored the charming Captain Whitbey Inn—it felt cozy, and we wished we could have arrived earlier to spend more time and try the restaurant. No complaints.

The hotel is spectacular and feels like a hidden gem with that old‑school Pacific Northwest vibe. The on‑site restaurant overlooks Penn Cove Beach, and I recommend the Lagoon Rooms, though Wi‑Fi there barely works. Breakfast at the Espresso Bar in the General Store is great (shout out to the honey & lavender latte!), even though it’s paid separately. It’s a peaceful spot, parking is easy, and a personalized welcome sheet with the moon phase and Whidbey Island fun facts was a nice touch. The property is close to Coupeville center, making the stay lovely. A few suggestions: an email before arrival with the best ways to reach the island would help, especially for newcomers. The Wellness Studio and Sauna could be more visible, and the service could feel warmer. When I went to the front desk, there were few people around, and I wasn’t sure who worked there. It seemed written communication got more attention than the in‑person welcome.

The grounds are beautiful, but the rooms are uncomfortable—minimalist, dark, and the bed is a single futon style mattress about 24 inches off the floor and hard as a rock. The space could fit an easy chair, which would have been nice. There’s no TV or mini‑fridge, which we expected on trips. I called the restaurant at least half a dozen times before and during our stay and never reached anyone to book. Skip this place.

I loved the unique, quirky, rustic vibe and the cozy dinner atmosphere with double‑cabana seating on the lawn. The wellness room, tree net, and pour‑over coffee in the room were lovely touches. The waterfront was great, and the cabins looked adorable, though we didn’t stay there. We had to book a lagoon room because we were traveling with an 18‑year‑old daughter—only 21+ allowed in the lodge. The wait staff was great; I recommend making a reservation. The lagoon rooms were rustic but had extra touches. Historic properties struggle with charging devices; they tried to fix it but planning ahead helps. The garden was neglected, and the lagoon didn’t meet expectations, but it was still a nice place to relax, and I liked the Adirondack chairs on the deck. The biggest downside was other residents walking by our room/deck to get to theirs. We couldn’t leave windows open because someone could easily get in, and it was too warm, making sleep hard. The price was a barrier. Still, I’d stay again—just ask for a different room.
