“The hotel owners ruined our holiday, the staff though were pleasant throughout”
The room we booked was spacious and the staff were good. The hotel closed the pool for routine maintenance and didn’t let us know beforehand, so we couldn’t cancel and find another place that met our needs. We only found out after we had checked in and unpacked. We were offered a cancellation, but nothing suitable was available on short notice. I talked to the manager about resolving this amicably, suggesting a reasonable discount and that at least their room wouldn’t be empty and we wouldn’t lose another day of holiday. I insisted that resolving this amicably was best, I wouldn’t complain about the pool closure, just that all problems were sorted out properly. I asked for a 25 % discount, which I felt was fair. The pool was one of the main reasons we chose the hotel, plus it was a family‑run establishment and we expected much better treatment regarding the loss of the pool. Before giving us a discount, the hotel seemed more concerned about how much they would pay. Hotel policy made us feel they wanted as much from guests as possible. An extra slice of toast was chargeable, an extra hash brown was chargeable, all services had a compulsory service charge. To get my extra toast free I had to bring the bread myself and the kitchen staff toasted it for me. I also had to bring my own jam and butter. Even though the room was okay, I had to fix the shower back onto the wall, clean the shower heads for them to work efficiently, which I did myself. There was an electrical wire hanging from the mirror in the bathroom. The worktop hob in the kitchen was fitted the wrong way round and all instructions were upside down; this was corrected when I pointed it out. The fridge top surface needed cleaning and it was obvious the fridge hadn’t been moved out for cleaning because the old dusty cobwebs were visible on the sides.
