Tsubakiso, a historic 85‑year‑old Japanese townhouse in Nara, sits five minutes from Kintetsu‑Nara Station and 850 m from JR Nara. The spot was spot‑on, just a quick stroll to the main shopping streets, the deer park, and the old temples, and I especially enjoyed wandering the park and temples early before the crowds. The Japanese‑style room was roomy, quiet, and snug, and the host was incredibly warm, generous, and welcoming.

The service was very polite, and the whole place, including the staff, made me feel the charm of Nara. Even though there are izakayas and convenience stores nearby, the area is quiet enough that outside noise isn’t a problem. It seems foreigners usually stay here, so I’d recommend Japanese visitors check it out too.

When we arrived at Tsubakiso, we instantly felt at home. I’ve never felt so well taken care of by a lodging place as at Tsubakiso. Staying in a Japanese home in central Nara with such a wonderful host as Hirasawa‑san was unforgettable. She truly created a home for us in Nara. The room was comfortable and nicely decorated, and it was relaxing to look out at the garden trees. The room and surroundings were authentic, giving us a taste of real, beautiful Japan that’s hard to find as a visiting tourist. Breakfast was a special experience, absolutely worth it. We received small gifts tailored to us and to what we told her about our lives. We felt truly seen. I will never forget Tsubakiso. I didn’t always get the bidet function in the toilet to work, and the hot water in the shower was a bit unstable.

The host was incredibly kind and thoughtful, and the Japanese breakfast in the garden was simply amazing. The room was cozy and offered a lovely view of the garden.

The welcome was fabulous by an adorable lady who spoke a few words of English. Small welcome gifts, drinks in the fridge, coffee, tea… Breakfast was excellent, and you can leave your luggage in storage. Traditional inn, very well placed and quiet. A little paradise with a golden lady. Nothing to report.
