The staff who came to change the sheets were quick and friendly, yet the safety features were lacking: barred windows, no exit except the front door, no visible fire extinguisher or emergency kit, and no staff on site (arrival by code). Cleanliness was poor – the room, bathroom, and windows were dirty upon arrival, no housekeeping for 8 days unless requested, and an extra €30 was demanded for cleaning even though a €30 cleaning fee was already included. The bathroom tiles were dirty. The floor had holes that could injure bare feet, the bathroom furniture was rusted, the door nearly hit the sink, and the toilet was glued to the wall. The “sofa‑bed” was a folding chair without sheets or pillows. Soundproofing was nonexistent; the door let in corridor light that automatically turned on, even at 4 am. Power was cut one morning. The view, despite the name “River Guest House,” faced an inner roof with bars in front.
“Excelente estadia.”
Comfortable, simple, and clean room – definitely a good experience. We’ll return if it’s convenient on a next trip to Porto.
“Lovely room with huge windows overlooking the river Douro. Amazing views of the sun’s rays dancing on the water, in the”
The riverside setting is stunning, and the café next door, Confeitaria Portillo, is the best I’ve seen in Portugal—its umbrellas and chairs set up every morning, and the food and coffee are mouth‑watering. The staff are incredibly kind, and the breakfast (and lunch) spot right outside my door lets me watch boats glide by and a tram chug past, making for great people‑watching both on the street and from the two large windows. The bed is comfy, there's a handy shelf for storage, and the shower and bathroom are well sized. The only downside is the nighttime noise from nearby parties, which isn’t the hotel’s fault, and the lack of a kitchen, something other guesthouses I’ve stayed at have. Still, I’d return in a heartbeat—just bring earplugs next time.
The location is good, under 30 minutes on foot from the historic centre, restaurants nearby, and the tram and bus stops are close. The downstairs café is perfect for breakfast, and the bedding is excellent. Check‑in is self‑service with a code. The major downside is the street noise – the room faces the Douro and feels like being on the street, and a small fridge and microwave would be a plus.
“Great stay and value for money - if only the door unlocking with code was simpler and more reliable.”
The room was spotless, stylish, and cozy, and the spot was spot-on—right above a café that made breakfast a breeze. The only hiccup was the code‑locked door; it kept stalling and I had to try multiple times before it opened, which left me uneasy about leaving the apartment.
