Mawingu lodge

The proximity to the ocean was great and the room looked clean, but the price listed at booking was $29, including a $2 city (tourist) tax, while they demanded $31, also including a $2 tax; I asked for a receipt and never received one. The street was very noisy, with traffic and people all night, preventing a good night’s sleep. There were a lot of mosquitoes and gnats that bit all night, and the insect spray and mosquito net did not help. The bed was uncomfortable, and there was either a creaking ceiling or some animal scratching constantly, which also disturbed sleep.

We stayed at Mawingu Lodge and it was a delight; the room was spotless, cozy, and framed by a stunning tropical garden. Its spot is ideal for wandering the genuine fishing village of Kizimkazi and the nearby dolphin beach. The staff were friendly, inviting, and always ready to assist. It felt like a peaceful, authentically local Zanzibar spot. Nothing major went wrong, and we’d gladly return.

The setting was very relaxed, with a beautiful garden close to the beach but not on the beach. The owner employed plenty of staff for security, cleaning, and gardening. In the morning heading to the fish dock is an experience; all the night’s catch arrives, is immediately prepared, divided, and sold. Power outages are beyond the lodge’s control, but when there’s no ventilation the rooms become quite hot.
