The Close Hotel

“A lovely, comfortable and atmospheric hotel.”

The Close Hotel felt just as we remembered from about 10 years ago: great spot, charming garden, and all the staff were attentive. The reception rooms were beautiful for dining, especially with the elegant fire burning. The food was very good, breakfast excellent, and the staff made the whole experience memorable. The only downside was the carpark, which is a bit small and hard to navigate when full. Our room, The Cuckoo, was pretty and comfortable but had a massive low beam overhanging much of the room; despite warnings, it still felt dangerous, especially at night or for older guests, and that was the only thing that brought our visit down.

“Overnight stay to visit friends”

The rooms we booked were beautiful and had everything we wanted. The evening meal was absolutely superb and the portion size was just right, as was breakfast. We didn't have the full English menu, but what we saw coming out looked like good quality. We just had the pastries and they were lovely. Nothing else to complain about, except all the stairs after a couple too many drinks before bed!

Clean, polite, and efficient staff throughout. Reception staff were clear and precise. The restaurant was well presented with good food. I would have liked the room to be more spacious. When I asked for champagne on arrival to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, I would have preferred a quoted price instead of just being told the cost.

“great hotel and lovely food”

Lunch and breakfast were excellent. The surroundings and the hotel itself were lovely, and the staff were friendly. I wasn’t happy with the extra charge for checking in early.

The Close is a centrally located, almost 500‑year‑old historic manor built from grey Cotswold stone, featuring Victorian and Georgian elements and a walled, park‑like garden. The hotel offers superb facilities and excellent dining, making for a truly special experience. I would expect a hotel of this caliber to pre‑populate the digital registration form with the master data so guests don’t have to painstakingly type all information onto a tiny tablet.
