The stay was gorgeous. The staff were brilliant and very helpful. The room was clean, spacious, and the bed and pillows were comfortable. You even get your own sauna! The garden and hot tub were spot on. Breakfast was beautiful and could be brought to your room. On top of that, there was a complimentary bottle of Prosecco in your fridge, plus fresh water, tea, and coffee making facilities. We will definitely return and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience. Well done!

“Great Location, The Room? Not So Much”

The location was outstanding for exploring Durham. The bathroom had great water pressure, a nice shower, and good towels. The ladies working there were all very nice. There’s a room with a sliding glass door to a garden that I highly recommend instead of the Phoenix Room we stayed in. Breakfast was adequate, though the same three muffins appeared in the case every morning and the yogurt ran out quickly; the fruit was only little cups like a kid’s lunchbox. The cooked breakfast was fine. The TV and WiFi worked well and there was plenty of parking. We booked the Phoenix Suite hoping the jetted tub would be useful after long hikes, climbing castle stairs, and steep hillsides, but we never used it. The rooms were humid, hot, and stuffy, so we didn’t even fill a tub with hot water. Even the shower overwhelmed the rooms. The only window was a tiny transom next to the bedroom that offered no relief and only worsened the issue when someone smoked outside every evening, leaving our rooms smelling like an ashtray. There was a fan on each side of the bed, but nobody wants a fan blowing directly into their face all night. I don’t think we slept more than a couple of hours each night and woke up sweat-soaked. Aside from the breakfast crew, we saw no staff at any other time of day.

“Restaurant and bar closed… disappointed but Staff and board were fine”

I’m torn with this review. The room was clean, the beds were comfortable, the staff were very pleasant and the breakfast was god. We booked it the same day we wanted it, and we always look for a bar and a restaurant on site, so we can unwind after a day of travel. We booked it, and after that got an email to say that the bar closed at 5, and the restaurant was closed 3 days a week including the day we arrived. The email suggested a few alternatives which were only accessible by driving, so a drink was out the question. Nothing within walking distance at all for a meal or a drink. And of course we couldn’t cancel without losing the full payment. I was really annoyed as there was nothing on booking .com to warn us of this. Another option given was to order a takeaway! If I wanted a take away I would have stayed at home. . Like I say, I am torn with this review as the board and staff were good, but have the decency to at least warn us up front. If I had known that I wouldn’t have booked it on that night

“A wonderful family run pub with overnight accommodation”

Every staff member was polite, friendly, and genuinely happy from the moment we walked in until we left. The room was lovely, spotlessly clean, and well sized. The shower and toilet were clean, simple, and excellent. Our evening meal was served in a nice room, the menu and food were good quality and very good value. Parking was more than adequate. Breakfast choices were plentiful and flexible, no fault to be found. I would love to stay again. There was an evening function, but any noise from it did not disturb us at all, and the staff took every precaution to ensure this. What a lovely family‑run pub to have found on the way back to Scotland.
