The hotel sits in a great spot, but it’s a shame they’re not capitalising on it. The canal is lovely to walk along, and the local bars, coffee shops, and Sunday craft market are great. However, the hotel itself could be so much better. The price was fair, but I would have paid more if it were cleaner. After asking to move rooms because the first one had the dirtiest bathroom we’ve seen—every shower tile had black mould except the tray—the second room, supposedly an upgrade, had broken window catches, cracks filled with polyfiller that weren’t finished or painted, and very basic amenities. The old air‑conditioning unit flashed red and green all night but was totally inoperable, which is risky. The rooms were not clean: hairs on bedding, dusty tables, half‑eaten biscuits under a dusty glass dome. The bathroom, though retiled and apparently updated, still had thick limescale, some mould, and a broken drain hole. We had trouble getting into the room and needed a fob key from reception. Overall, a cheap stay that feels more like a motel; in Berkhamsted it should be better.
