Yamadaya Ryokan, opened in 1911 and renovated in 2019, offers tranquil Japanese-style rooms with tatami floors, futon bedding, and private seating areas. A public bath overlooks a serene garden, and free Wi‑Fi connects guests to nearby Higashi Honganji Temple (5 min walk) and JR Kyoto Station (10 min walk).

The welcome was excellent, the staff were kind and attentive. The ryokan’s location was great for walking tours. The futon‑equipped room felt nice, and the public bath was good. We ordered a kaiseki dinner, which was finely prepared and delicious.

Onsen. We cannot understand the good reviews at all; for us it was a nightmare. There were a lot of rules to follow. The room did not match the pictures we had seen beforehand. It was exactly 3 tatami mats, about 5 m², with only ceiling lighting and very uncomfortable. No freedom of movement because the futon mats filled the floor. We have already slept in a ryokan with much better “futon beds.” The tiny bathroom had no room to move (the shower and tap shared the same knob). The worst was the noise; we felt motorcycles rolling through our room. The room was on the 1st floor next to a very busy street (the pictures removed all cars). The staff said it could be loud because of a nearby construction site and gave us some earplugs. In reality we didn’t hear the construction because the street noise drowned everything. After three sleepless nights we left early. At checkout the front‑desk lady said she had never heard complaints about the loud street, which we find hard to believe. I would NOT recommend this place! We cannot judge the food because we did not order it. The onsen is pretty good.

An exceptionally beautiful experience. Sleeping in a traditional ryokan on futons in a tatami room. Everything was very clean and gorgeous. The operators were incredibly accommodating. The sento stays open until 24 h in the evenings and tattoos are allowed. The traditional breakfast is highly recommended and an experience in itself. Air conditioning, ventilation, and a full‑size fridge with freezer are in the room. Washing machine, dryer, and microwave are also available. The location is right at the entrance to the imposing “Higashi Hongan‑ji” temple. Highly recommended and we’ll gladly return.
