“A surprisingly pleasant stay, despite the shortcomings.”
We stayed in a seventh‑floor corner Deluxe Double Room with City View. It was huge and spotless, had a separate sitting area, and offered pleasant views of Cathedral Park and the Nativity Cathedral, even though the furnishings were kitschy Russian‑baroque. The central location was great, the shopping centre and supermarket in the same building were convenient, and breakfast was good and varied. The room was noisy, with traffic, outside music, and wind howling around the glass‑walled corner even in a light breeze. All exterior walls were glass, so the bulky curtains needed careful closing for privacy at night with the lights on. The lighting was cold white, and usable sockets were so scarce that we had to unplug a bedside lamp to charge our devices. There was drilling upstairs shortly before 8 p.m. on our first evening. Reception sent a security guard who spoke no English to investigate. The drilling returned the following evening; when we complained again, reception acted as though they knew nothing about it. On our final night, Halloween celebrations at a nearby bar/club caused loud noise and vibrations. The mattress was incredibly hard, like compressed straw, and the inexplicably narrow duvet barely covered the bed’s surface. We requested a second duvet the next morning, but only received one after asking again that evening; reception understood “blanket” but not “duvet.” Bath towels were small, the toilet was extremely uncomfortable to sit on, and the water was lukewarm rather than hot. Housekeeping initially only changed the towels, leaving the bed unmade and the pillows untouched; the following day, the bed was only roughly made. Most staff spoke little or no English. Service was generally unsmiling and felt unwelcoming, something we also experienced elsewhere in Moldova. Somehow, despite all these shortcomings, our stay was pleasant overall.
