The beds were bunked. The old building smelled awful, the carpets were dirty, the streets leading to the building were dirty, and there were homeless people everywhere.

“SNEAKY SKUNK”

The location was perfect, quiet, and warm. The only issue was the smell—someone snuck in and smelled up the blankets.

It’s super central, close to Union Square and Chinatown. Both staff I met were super friendly and helpful. Even though it’s central, it’s also close to the Tenderloin, so it doesn’t feel like the safest place I’ve ever stayed. I was on an upper bunk, and while the curtains are nice for privacy, the lack of any barrier on the side of the bed didn’t feel safe—one could easily fall a long way out if you’re a wriggly sleeper. Finally, I was grateful to be able to leave my bags for a few hours after checking out, but no ID tags were requested, so in theory any other guest who’d left bags in the office could have picked them up.

“I will never return to this location again”

The hostel’s kitchen was a highlight, but the rooms were in a bad part of San Francisco. I had to change rooms because the original room’s guests were unhygienic and smelled bad. The new room was no better—still stinky, and worse, it sat next to an alley where locals smoked cigarettes and used drugs all day, letting the fumes seep straight into the room.
