The Parador de Zafra, dating from 1437, is a historic hotel transformed from a 15th-century castle. Its features include a central courtyard, grand restaurant, and seasonal pool set in pretty gardens. The hotel boasts a majestic lounge, former chapel with Gothic-Mudéjar turret, and 9 towers linked by robust stone walls. Located in the village centre, it offers easy access to historic sites, shops, and restaurants.

Nice spot right in the city centre. The rooms were a bit dark by Dutch standards but still very comfortable. We brought bikes and could neatly park them in a courtyard.

Location and courtyard are definitely the highlights. The building is a 15th‑century castle, but we’re stuck in the 21st century, and the décor is dreadful (though I love antiques). The old castle furniture, upholstery from the parador’s opening, the completely outdated bathroom, and the everywhere‑old carpets made the room feel ancient. We stayed in a street‑level room that required descending 8 flights of stairs to reach. I can’t even say whether it was clean or not – everything seemed so old: doors, wardrobes, furniture.

A fabulous building in a pretty dull town, with very interesting rooms and an excellent restaurant (the wine was fine too). The staff were outstanding and the beds were comfy. The bathroom looked dated, and the room had open vents onto the corridor that were a bit intrusive and let in a lot of light at night. The fountain in the middle of the inner courtyard was lovely, but it smelled a bit like sewage when you sat near it.

The room was very spacious and quiet, and the bathroom was huge. We were welcomed with a bottle of water. The pool was great, with plenty of loungers and parasols. We arrived early, and because our room wasn’t ready yet, we were allowed to store our luggage and relax in the pool. When the room finally opened, all our luggage was already in it – excellent and friendly service. We were told we’d get a voucher for a welcome drink, but it turned out to be only for members of the parador, which could have been clarified earlier. We ended up paying, which was unexpected.
