“A 300 year old walawwa(mansion) that still feells like a home”
We expected a charming old house and left feeling as if we’d stayed inside a slice of Sri Lankan history. The walawwa, over 300 years old, keeps every detail—from the 1911 façade to the jak and ebony woodwork and open courtyards—intact, not turned into a museum but still warm and lived‑in. Ishantha, the sixth‑generation owner, has poured himself into preserving that feel. The setting is half the experience: twenty‑five acres of tea, cinnamon, greenery, early‑morning birdsong, and the Adam’s Peak range in the backdrop. Walking the estate was a highlight. Ishantha and his team looked after us genuinely, never feeling scripted, sharing the house and village history when asked and being quick and cheerful with any need. The food was traditional Sri Lankan done properly. Rooms were clean, comfortable, and full of character. If you want a hotel, this isn’t it; if you want a place with a story, quiet, and honest hospitality, it’s hard to beat. Thank you Ishantha and the team. Nothing affected our stay; it’s a little away from the main road, so a vehicle helps, and mobile signal can be patchy in places—though most people, including myself, will count that as part of the appeal.
