The hotel is no‑frills but has a great location, only 30 seconds across the road from the Central Station, and a 25‑minute walk into town, which is handy for day trips to nearby towns. A nice snack hamper is provided on entry inside the room. Rooms are small but clean and safe. However, a 7‑digit code is required to enter the floor where all the rooms are, so you must either write it down separately or ensure your phone has enough battery for the whole day, otherwise you won’t be able to get back in. On a couple of nights, other guests’ phones had obviously died, and they would ring the buzzer endlessly until another guest let them in in the middle of the night; this should be replaced with a digital card or key‑fob to prevent that. I stayed for 5 nights and was only given a small square bar of soap that lasted about 2 days; it would have been nice to have it replaced or topped up during the stay.

The bed was comfortable and large. First, this is not a hotel—it’s an apartment where you rent one room, essentially couch‑surfing with a booking fee. Getting in is the hardest part, and the entry instructions seem written by someone describing a dream. You’re given three phone numbers for three different people, none of whom are at the property, all apparently in witness protection. I rang all three—better luck calling Janis Joplin, who has been dead since 1970. Speaking of which, we stayed in the Janis Joplin room in Italy. The room next door is themed after Zucchero, who is Italian, so someone clearly had the right idea and then lost the plot one door later. I can only assume the next rooms are the Mussolini Suite and the Ed Sheeran Broom Cupboard. The nightlife comes to you whether you like it or not; the other apartments partied until 2 am, and the walls are made of hope. I was there one night and left knowing everyone’s names and who’d fallen out with whom. The bathroom is tiny; I could sit on the toilet, wash my hands and shower at the same time, which saves time but costs dignity. The welcome snacks were crackers and a selection of mystery items I believe were left behind by previous guests as a warning. I showed them to an Italian, who crossed himself. The bed was genuinely comfortable. The headboard is a painted garden fence. I kept waking up expecting a neighbour to lean over it and ask for his hedge trimmer back. The phone sockets are 0.7 metres from the bed, a distance precisely calibrated so that your phone can charge or you can use it, but never both. And the bedside lights have one setting: alien abduction. I switched one on at 3 am and saw my ancestors. Finally, at checkout, a 10 % tourist tax, which I assume pays for the fence. One night was plenty. Would I stay again? Only if Janis Joplin answered the phone.
