The hotel is stunning, the Onsen is very clean and pleasant. The staff is extremely helpful. Breakfast is amazing! The dinner is a notch below, even though the setting and service are impeccable 😁

The hotel grounds are cool with plenty of garden space, giving a unique stay experience. There isn’t much to do in town unless you have a car.

This stay at Ryokan Kagetsu will stay with me forever. The place is very relaxing and full of charm, with many koi carp that really add to the special atmosphere. We really enjoyed the serenity it radiated. Being tattooed, we chose a room with a private onsen because the public onsen is not allowed for tattooed guests, which let us fully enjoy the experience without worry. Breakfasts were served in a common room, while dinners were brought straight to our room. We especially loved this experience around traditional Japanese cuisine, which introduced us to many dishes, ingredients, and flavors we hadn’t known before. You do need to be curious and open to new tastes: if you’re very picky with food, the experience might be a bit tougher! The staff were very welcoming and attentive throughout, we had nothing to complain about. I also got a massage, which perfectly complemented this relaxing interlude. Our room had a few slightly outdated elements that could use some renovation, such as some furniture with peeling paint and a missing slat on the blinds in front of our private onsen. That’s still pretty minor: the room was very clean and especially spacious, especially compared to accommodations we’ve had in big Japanese cities.

We loved strolling through the many beautifully manicured Japanese gardens, water features, and koi ponds. My wife had a blast feeding the koi. Dinners were private, quiet, and very enjoyable. Free ground coffee after breakfast was a nice bonus for us. Breakfast was okay but not outstanding, and it didn’t help that it was served in a large dining hall that felt like a school canteen. Still, that’s a minor quibble compared to everything else we loved at Kagetsu.

This ryokan is amazing. The buildings and gardens are beautiful, the onsen (public hot bath) is perfect after a long day. The futons are comfy to sleep on. We truly appreciated this experience as a piece of Japanese tradition. I recommend everyone to try it.
