Breakfast and the tavern were good, and the historic manor’s location and ambience right next to the Hainich and a wild cat enclosure were nice, but it feels more like a day‑trip spot with a great beer garden than a place for a proper overnight stay – a real pity. The bathroom has an old bathtub with a shower curtain and equipment from the early 1990s; a renovation is essential. The room has an ancient carpet, and the hallways are worn with large spots – unacceptable for hygiene and aesthetics. The floor coverings and the bathroom need updating, and the mattress was sagging, though everything appeared clean at first glance.

I found the old building charming, especially the restaurant that’s part of the hotel, and the staff were very friendly; the nights were quiet with no traffic noise at all. The only downside was that the hotel was hard to locate – neither Google Maps nor other GPS apps could guide us correctly. A helpful German tourist had been there before and pointed us in the right direction. If you’re in the same situation, keep an eye out for a green sign that says “hotel zum herrenhaus” and follow it.

The hotel’s location is great for hiking in the Hainich, the rooms are spacious, and breakfast is good; on nice days you can also eat in the beautiful beer garden under old trees.
