Friendly staff, but the room smelled musty and the bed felt like a bag of spanners that needed a serious upgrade; we complained and the hotel acknowledged our concerns, giving us a full refund for our nights, so I’d like to see an upgrade next time—being above a pub could make for a nice little getaway that also accepts dogs.

Great food, comfortable beds, and a nice atmosphere, yet the proprietors were unfriendly; we never felt at ease, they never spoke to us or asked about our stay or the York amenities, and we had to seek that info from locals. They lingered at the bar with their locals, vaping, and the pub’s noise persisted long after closing until 2 am, which was very annoying, so I won’t return.
