“The Bates Hotel”

We were in South Boston, Virginia, to attend a funeral and the family recommended this hotel as a convenient option. The only positive was its location right off the highway with easy access to the area. From the moment we arrived, the cleanliness and overall condition were terrible. The hallway carpet was extremely dirty and looked like it hadn’t been cleaned or replaced in years. In our room, trash was still in both bins, the bathroom floor had visible dirt under the sink, the carpet hadn’t been vacuumed, and the area around the ice machine was wet and dirty. The whole experience made us very uncomfortable. Normally we would have left, but we stayed to avoid a late‑cancellation penalty and an extra hotel bill. Cleanliness is a basic expectation, and this property fell far below it. I would not recommend this hotel.

The bed was great, the shower was just okay, and everyone was very friendly. The parking area was monitored by 24‑hour cameras. The place claimed to be newly renovated, yet the walls were patched and the paint in the bathroom was loose, leaving no spot to hang towels. The carpet was fine, and breakfast was a bit on the low side of fair. Paying $200 plus per night felt too expensive for what was offered.

The building’s appearance was a plus, but there was a strong mole smell and actual moles around the top of the tub.
