The staff were very friendly and the hotel sits right in the heart of the city, but the building feels ancient. There are no air‑conditioners you can turn on yourself; if the hotel decides it’s cold you can only switch on heat or the unit simply doesn’t work. The mattresses are old, famously bad, and the windows lack screens—there are stickers warning about mosquitoes and telling you not to open them, which makes sleeping impossible. The sound from neighboring rooms is so loud it feels like there are no walls, and the tap drips constantly. On the last day the curtain from the shower stall was taken away and they said it was going to be washed. Breakfast was sparse; at least they could have offered butter and jam for toast, and a kettle—if not in every room, at least at reception so I didn’t have to bring my own from abroad. The lights were dim everywhere, and the room wasn’t cleaned for the first few days until we complained.
