The room was spacious and easy to ventilate, and especially the private onsens, including the outdoor ones, were great; the yukatas were included with the toiletries. The owner was very welcoming, showed us around the neighborhood, and gave all the necessary details in good English. The environment was very calm. 8

It was our first ryokan on the Japan trip, but it felt like the ultimate place to experience living in a Japanese style. The rooms smelled of tatami and you could sip tea after spending as much time as you wanted in the private, climate‑controlled onsen. After probably 30 minutes of warm bath we returned to our room and slept like babies—I guess we need to improve our onsen skills.

The host was the friendliest, speaking English well over email and in person; he explained the ryokan and showed me around right after I arrived, then took me on a short village tour and made sure I caught the correct bus. After dinner we smoked and drank sake together, chatting about many things. I preferred the outdoor onsen and enjoyed it a lot; a smoking area is near the front entrance. The self‑serve kitchen has a fridge and washing machine. Google Maps has many errors in the village, but after a short walk it’s easy to navigate. Nearby are restaurants and a 7‑11, and a slightly longer walk brings you to some of the overpriced, crowded tourist spots in Beppu’s Hells. Walking the village at night is safe and lets you see the steam from underground drains. The place can be a bit hard to find at first; I knew it would be a traditional Japanese room with a futon on tatami, but the bed felt a bit too firm for me. I wish I could have stayed longer.
