“Silence is not golden or an option”

The location is amazing, but it’s right next to a railway station. That’s convenient for arrival, yet if your room is close to the station you’ll lose peace. If you’re in room 205, you should ask to be moved because the noise from the station and road is terrible. And just when you think you’ve found silence, room 204’s shower is next to your bed, so you’re woken by the shower noise.

The location couldn’t be better, right on the beach with lovely sea views in comfy beds. Breakfast was absolutely super, with good choices and quality. Rooms are nicely decorated, nodding to the building’s Art Deco style, and immaculately clean. Reception staff are friendly, welcoming, and polite. The downstairs areas are also well‑decorated and maintained. My daughter’s room had no air conditioning and felt stuffy; she slept with windows open and a fan all night, while mine was more comfortable. The old building means a lift installation could be problematic, though they offered to help with our bags. Tea and coffee were very limited—just a kettle, basic tea bags, coffee sachets, and milk pots—no fruit or herbal teas; biscuits were available but ordinary. I’ve stayed in hotels that even offer small complimentary bottles of local port and whisky, and there were no other drinks unless you used the downstairs bar or ordered room service. For a room of this quality and price, the ‘extras’ felt missing—no robes or slippers, for instance. The spa seemed pricey for basic use as an add‑on (it’s included if you book direct through the hotel). Maybe our expectations were a bit high, but it certainly wasn’t cheap to book.

“Not a great refurb, it has just had a lick of paint so upstairs still”

The location was great. I booked the outside spa but when I arrived I was told it was the indoor spa, the lady showed me around and there were a group of men drinking beer in the hot tub, I didn’t want to join them! So I didn’t get to use the facilities. I had dinner in the restaurant and it was served cold or room temp but certainly not hot. We also had white bait and pawns that were very fishy. I felt quite unwell after I’d eaten. The food was extremely poor
