The zen temple had spacious rooms, tasty food, and a sublime zazen meditation session, though it’s a long walk from the station. Nearby, the Daruma Temple lets you keep the Zen vibe going. I couldn’t keep a monkey off my back during zazen for more than a minute at a time.

The Ryokan feels traditional yet modern, very welcoming to foreigners, with staff who speak simple English. Once inside, the atmosphere is so zen that we started speaking softly to avoid disturbing the peace. We had the Ryokan all to ourselves and highly recommend the dinner and breakfast sets for a leisurely meal. The adjacent temple lets you meditate in the morning before breakfast or stroll around the grounds to view the koi pond. It’s a great spot to relax and refresh away from the city buzz, though it’s a bit off the tourist trail—having a car helps you just chill and zen.

The room was surprisingly spacious and clean; I liked that there was no TV, and the impressive koi pond was a highlight. The historic oni‑kawa tiles and the main hall were also great, but the most memorable part was chatting with the resident priest’s father. Choosing this place for a birthday celebration was a good decision. The free tea and coffee were appreciated, but having to walk far to get them to the room was inconvenient.

The whole experience was great. You feel very welcome and nothing is too much for the owner/monk and staff. I’m not a futon fan, but part of the experience it was good to sleep on. The temple and its history are beautiful. We sincerely recommend staying at least 2 nights here and waking up early to attend the meditations. A special thanks to the owner for what he has done for us—really appreciated!

The room was comfortable with tatami, the host was friendly, the meals were delicious, there was meditation in the temple, a garden, and an outdoor bath.
