“We never made it.”

Our experience with Bowlish House was deeply disappointing and stressful. We booked a stay from 9th to 14th October 2026 well in advance, and the hotel even emailed us to confirm our arrival time. However, just two days before our holiday, they abruptly cancelled our reservation , leaving us stranded with almost no time to find alternative accommodation. Remarkably, despite claims of being closed, the hotel remained active and bookable on multiple travel websites. It was only after I manually intervened and contacted them that the listings were taken down. To make matters worse, our full payment was processed days prior to the cancellation. has informed us that they cannot issue a refund until Bowlish House officially confirms we did not stay there. Management claimed they instructed to cancel all reservations weeks earlier, yet they never bothered to reach out to us directly. They have shown zero accountability, no interest in helping us recover our money, and a complete disregard for the massive inconvenience and distress they caused. Avoid this property. Bowlish House continue to deflect the blame onBooking.com, despite the fact that once a booking is made they almost instant notification on their system

“Extremely disappointing, I will not be coming back, you should avoid this place.”

The house was decorated in a quirky and interesting way, and the owner’s welcome was warm; a complimentary drink during the stay was appreciated. The breakfast was extremely poor, so I had to go out for a decent breakfast. The advert claimed a continental breakfast, but there was no toast, cheeses, meats, fruits, fresh tea or coffee; only snack items in baskets and a couple of yoghurts in the fridge. No staff were present at breakfast or at any other time during the day, and at one point I urgently needed a pen and could not reach anyone by phone or even by calling out through the house. I eventually had to search random drawers to find a biro, which I did not want to do. A pen and paper are basic additions to any room. The room needed maintenance and cleaning, especially in the bathroom where jets of water blasted out of the electric shower box, the shower head mount fell off the wall as soon as you touched it, and the taps were obviously not cleaned properly or regularly, showing limescale build‑up. In the room, the metal headboard was not attached to the bed, so it clanked against the wall whenever I moved it, and there was one window that had to remain open constantly because the room was extremely warm. That single small window had a blackout blind that moved and banged against the wall with the slightest breeze. The mattress was not flat and sloped to the side. I did not have a good night’s sleep on either night, and I did not get a proper breakfast, and the staff’s attention to my stay was non‑existent. It felt like the guests who were staying did not matter enough to even undertake the basics of being contactable during the day or to put out fresh toast, tea and coffee at breakfast. What made this whole experience worse was that after my stay I reported all of this to the owner and they totally failed to deal with my complaint properly.

“Disappointed”

The room was large and comfortable. The photos on the website did not reflect the actual current condition of the facilities. We were given a very warm welcome by the owner, but that was the last we saw of her. All other communication was done via text. We did not see anyone else there. The breakfast was a help‑yourself continental breakfast and was poor, with a thermos to provide a coffee or tea. The bread was not fresh. I think it was generally very expensive for what we got. One of the reasons we chose Bowlish House was because the photos looked so good, but it was not an accurate reflection of its current state and needed to be updated.

I loved that the very friendly owners are environmentally and animal friendly. The rooms had plant milk as default, which is a nice change! The place has a very homely feel with a well‑stocked fridge and help‑yourself breakfast, again with plenty of plant‑based and healthy options, including freshly picked blackberries.
