“Read on before booking this place in a great location”
The apartment’s main strengths are its historic character, spacious rooms, and exceptional location. The bedrooms are the highlight. Camera Apollo has a very high ceiling painted with a classical figure holding a lyre and laurel wreath, surrounded by floral decoration. Camera Diana has its own painted ceiling and a large reproduction of Titian’s Venus of Urbino above the bed. Both rooms are spacious and contain substantial antique furniture, mirrors, cabinets, and other distinctive furnishings. Its principal weaknesses are severe nighttime noise, inconsistent housekeeping, visible wear, and check-in and access complications. The apartment needs a thorough deep cleaning, especially the despairing entrance to the building before even reaching the apartment. Paint is chipped or peeling, walls are scuffed, furniture is worn, radiators and window sills are dirty and peeling, and some chairs badly need attention to keep them together and safe. These defects are not catastrophic, but together they create an impression of neglect. The windows provide limited views and little direct sunlight, and changes in bedroom floor levels can be trip hazards. The most serious issue is nighttime noise. A kebab shop directly outside both bedrooms stayed open as late as 3 a.m. during the week during our visit and attracted crowds whose conversations, yelling, and screaming echoed into the apartment. Closed shutters did little to reduce the noise, which made sleep nearly impossible. Ordinary earplugs were ineffective; noise-cancelling earbuds may be necessary. Check-in was also problematic. On Sunday afternoon of our arrival, the key was not in the lockbox because the cleaners had transportation difficulties and arrived well after our scheduled check-in. They tried to help, and we appreciated their efforts, but repeated calls to the owner went unanswered and there was no voicemail. The young neighbors in the apartment tried to help us but could not. A dependable backup contact would improve the experience. Parking and vehicle access require advance planning because access to the restricted traffic zone is limited, even when a vehicle has been registered. The owners sent instructions for us to provide our license plate information for that purpose, but we never heard from them after doing so. We found that taking a taxi from near Porta Santa Lucia was a practical way to transport our luggage. Also, be aware that Urbino is a hill town with very steep streets
