The location of Hotel Schloss Basthorst is unbeatable, and the whole property feels like a dream. The entire staff is friendly, attentive, and helpful, which made our short two‑day stay memorable and we’re already planning our next visit. However, there were a couple of issues that bothered us. On the first evening, we were so excited about the spa and restaurant that we asked at reception whether the hotel would stay open during Christmas and if there would be any holiday offers. We also wanted to know if we could switch rooms because we were on the ground floor of the tower house and other guests were smoking in the courtyard, with the smoke drifting into our room; additionally, there was black mold in our shower cabin—though I won’t post photos. The receptionist came across as very rude and only told us that we had booked the cheapest room category, which left me perplexed. We didn’t expect a free upgrade, but we were hoping for an upgrade if possible, and the lack of any offer disappointed me, so I didn’t want to continue the conversation with that gentleman. His attitude toward us was unpleasant, though we chose that room because we needed a quick stay and wanted to explore the hotel. Honestly, we never considered that guests might be judged by category. Please don’t misunderstand—this was just that moment at reception, and who knows what was going on with that man. Otherwise, the stay at the castle hotel was a dream and we will definitely return.
