A short history
Alor Setar was founded in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin II as the eighth administrative seat of the Kedah Sultanate. River geography made it a natural trade node, but also exposed it to repeated invasions from Siam throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. British administration arrived under the 1909 Anglo-Siamese Treaty, leaving brick administrative offices beside traditional royal structures.
