Paraguay

Asuncion

Colonial memory and low-rise quiet along the Paraguay River.

introduction

Overview

Asunción spreads south from a curve on the Paraguay River. The city splits its life between two distinct nodes: the quiet historic core and the modern commercial hub around Villa Morra. Taxis and rideshares connect these areas easily because public buses run without fixed timetables. Expect intense humidity in summer and a calm pace that rewards straightforward observation.

Airport connection

Uber and Bolt pick up directly outside Silvio Pettirossi Airport arrivals. A ride into Villa Morra costs around ₲60,000.

Historical distinction

Founded in 1537, Asunción earned the title Mother of Cities as the base for Spanish expeditions across the Rio de la Plata.

Payment habits

Card terminals work across Villa Morra shops, but cash in Guaraní is essential inside Mercado 4 and local food stands.

food

Cornbread, cassava starch, and cold herbal tea

Paraguayan cuisine relies heavily on cornmeal, cassava (mandioca), cheese, and beef. Sopa Paraguaya serves as the national dish: despite its name, it is a dense, savory baked cornbread made with corn flour, lard, milk, eggs, and fresh cheese. Mandioca accompanies nearly every lunch as a standard side dish.Daily culture revolves around tereré, a cold infusion of yerba mate poured over ice and crushed medicinal herbs (yuyos). Locals carry personal thermos flasks everywhere from office desks to bus stops. For dinner, try vorí vorí, a rich chicken broth thickened with small corn and cheese dumplings.

  • Order tereré on the street

Buy a cup and thermos set from street vendors on Calle Palma. They crush herbs like mint or lemongrass directly into your cold water flask.

  • Try chipa warm in the morning

Buy chipa—savory cassava starch bread baked with cheese and anise—from vendors carrying woven baskets on street corners.

  • Observe lunch hours

Traditional downtown eateries serve lunch between 12:00 and 14:00. Many small spots close during late afternoon heat before reopening at 20:00.

history

A short history

Founded in 1537, Asunción served as the regional capital for Spanish conquest across southern South America. Its location along the Paraguay River provided strategic access to the interior continent. Colonial rule ended in May 1811 when local officers ousted the Spanish governor without firing a single shot. The nineteenth century brought devastation through the Triple Alliance War (1864–1870), during which Allied forces occupied Asunción. Recovery proceeded slowly through the twentieth century under extended military rule, most notably Alfredo Stroessner’s dictatorship from 1954 to 1989. Today, commercial life expands eastward while the riverfront retains its historic core.

Getting around

Navigating Asunción requires choosing between cheap rideshare apps and public buses. Rideshare services like Uber and Bolt are reliable and safer than navigating confusing bus routes. Local buses no longer accept cash and require payment via an electronic transit card (Jaha or Más), but they lack published schedules or dedicated stops in many areas.

  • City buses require rechargeable cards (Jaha or Más). Buy and top them up at electronic payment kiosks (Apostas Express).

  • Traffic bottlenecks heavily along Avenida España and Avenida Mariscal López during morning and evening rush hours.

  • Street taxis rarely use meters for foreign travelers. Confirm the total fare with the driver before getting inside.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Observe tereré etiquette

When offered tereré, drink until the straw gurgles, then return the cup. Say thanks only when you do not want another refill.

  • Bilingual speech is standard

Paraguay is officially bilingual. Spanish handles formal business, while Guaraní mixes into daily conversation (Jopará).

  • Siesta closures affect small shops

Smaller downtown stores shut down between 12:00 and 15:00. Modern shopping malls stay open through the afternoon.

  • ATMs charge withdrawal fees

Most local ATMs charge a fixed fee (around ₲35,000–40,000) on foreign cards. Withdraw larger sums fewer times to save money.

  • Power sockets use European plugs

Electricity runs at 220V. European two-round-pin (Type C) plugs fit standard outlets across hotels.
