Batumi grew from an ancient Roman outpost into a fortified Ottoman coastal trading town called Batum. Its modern identity emerged in the late 19th century when the Russian Empire connected the port to Baku's oil fields via railway and pipeline.Foreign investors transformed the small town into a prosperous Black Sea oil terminal. Soviet rule turned Batumi into a subtropical resort zone and port hub, setting the stage for its 21st-century boom into a casino and high-rise destination.
