A short history
Long before white settlement, Indigenous tribes including the Crow hunted along the Yellowstone River and utilized the Rimrocks for protection. The town originated in 1882 as a planned rail hub for the Northern Pacific Railroad. Named after railroad president Frederick H. Billings, the settlement grew from a tent town into a regional shipping capital within months.
