Rocky Mountain Parks Access

Banff National Park sits 125 kilometres west of Calgary. Day trips require a Parks Canada pass purchased at the park gate or online before entering.

Plus 15 Skywalk Network

Downtown office buildings connect through 18 kilometres of enclosed walkways 15 feet above street level. Use them to navigate downtown during winter cold snaps.

food

Ginger beef, Alberta beef, and taprooms

Calgary dining balances deep-rooted steakhouse culture with modern craft brewing and Chinese-Canadian food heritage. Deep-fried ginger beef was invented here at Silver Inn Restaurant in the 1970s to appeal to local palates, and remains a menu staple in taverns across town.Local ranching traditions make Alberta beef central to prime rib joints and high-end steakhouses along Stephen Avenue. Meanwhile, industrial conversions in the Beltline and Barley Belt have created a dense network of microbrewery taprooms serving small-batch pale ales and lagers.

history

A short history

Calgary developed from a remote police outpost into Canada's energy corporate center in just over a century. Indigenous Blackfoot, Tsuut'ina, and Stoney-Nakoda nations inhabited the river valleys long before European arrival. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway transformed the outpost into an agricultural shipping hub. Subsequent oil discoveries reshaped the economy into an executive headquarters city.
