introduction
Centurion sits directly between Johannesburg and Pretoria along the N1 highway corridor. The city functions primarily as a residential and corporate anchor around a heavily engineered river basin. You navigate it best by car or via the Gautrain rapid rail system. Expect gated residential estates, strip malls, and intense traffic during peak commuter hours.
Aviation status
Swartkop Air Force Base is the oldest operational air force station in South Africa, established in 1921.
Matchday traffic bottleneck
International cricket matches at SuperSport Park block West Avenue and cause major delays on the M10 corridor.

history
Centurion developed on farmland along the Hennops River valley between Pretoria and Johannesburg. The area remained predominantly agricultural until industrialization expanded around the railway connection in the early 20th century.Originally named Verwoerdburg in 1967, residents voted to rename the municipality Centurion in 1995 following political transition. Urban developers built Centurion Mall directly over a dammed section of the Hennops River, creating the central lake around which the commercial core stands today.
