Dalian

Russian plazas, Japanese streetcars, and Yellow Sea seafood.

introduction

Overview

Dalian sits on the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula, bounded by the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea. Late 19th-century Russian planners laid its circular grids, and Japanese occupiers built its initial tramways. You navigate the city by subway and vintage streetcars, shifting between grand colonial squares and reclaimed waterfronts.

Airport transport

Metro Line 2 links Zhoushuizi Airport directly to Zhongshan Square in 25 minutes for 4 RMB. Taxis take the same time but cost around 35 RMB.

Architectural legacy

Zhongshan Square holds ten heritage buildings built between 1899 and 1936, displaying Renaissance, Gothic, and Japanese Imperial Crown styles.

Lushun access limits

Foreign passport holders cannot enter certain military areas in Lushun. Carry your physical passport when visiting former Russo-Japanese War sites.

food

Yellow Sea shellfish and Shandong heritage

Dalian cuisine fuses Shandong culinary traditions with fresh Yellow Sea catch. Local cold-water seafood grows slowly, yielding firm meat and clean salinity. Expect garlic-heavy sauces, quick stir-frying, and minimal spice compared to inland China.

  • Sea urchin (Hai Dan)

Eaten raw with soy sauce or steamed into egg custard. Best sampled at seafood stalls between May and August.

  • Crispy pork fillet (Guo Bao Rou)

Dalian cooks make a localized crispy pork with sweet-and-sour glaze, showing Northeastern Chinese influences.
