Granada

Moorish palaces, steep hills, and free tapas.

introduction

Overview

Granada sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains in eastern Andalusia. You walk uphill constantly across cobbled Moorish quarters and Catholic monuments. The city retains a strict tradition of serving a free dish with every alcoholic drink. You come for the medieval Islamic palaces and stay for the walking routes.

Alhambra entry window

You must enter the Nasrid Palaces within the exact 30-minute window printed on your ticket. Staff deny entry if you arrive one minute late.

UNESCO medieval quarters

UNESCO lists the Alhambra, Generalife, and Albaicín district as a joint World Heritage site.

Tapas policy

Granada remains one of the last Spanish cities where bars give you a free full portion of food with every beer or wine.

food

Free tapas and Andalusian frying

Granada serves a free portion of food with every ordered beer, wine, or soft drink. You do not select dishes from a menu at traditional spots; the kitchen sends consecutive rounds of food as you order additional drinks. Regional specialties include habas con jamón (broad beans sautéed with cured ham) and remojón granadino (a cold salad of salted cod, oranges, black olives, and olive oil). Local microbreweries and wine bars near Plaza Nueva continue the tradition alongside old-line taverns.

  • Tapas hours

Lunch service runs 13:30 to 16:00. Evening tapas service begins around 20:30 and peaks after 21:30.

  • Drink to food ratio

One drink equals one tapa per person. Ordering a second draft beer yields a second, usually larger dish.

  • Calle Navas versus Calle Elvira

Calle Navas concentrates traditional seafood and ham bars. Calle Elvira features North African spices and shawarma spots.

history

A short history

Granada was the final Muslim realm on the Iberian Peninsula. The Nasrid dynasty ruled the Emirate of Granada from 1230 until 1492, building the Alhambra complex as their fortified seat. In January 1492, Sultan Muhammad XII surrendered the city to Catholic Monarchs Isabella I and Ferdinand II. The fall of Granada completed the Reconquista and triggered major structural changes, including the construction of a Renaissance cathedral directly over the city's Great Mosque.
