Hakodate

Hokkaido's southern port of squid, trams, and star forts.

introduction

Overview

Hakodate sits on Hokkaido's narrow southern tail, anchored by a dramatic mountain peak and a star-shaped fortress. Western traders arrived here early, leaving behind hillside churches and brick warehouses along the harbor. You travel easily across town on two streetcar lines that tie the main train station to coastal hot springs. Expect cold sea winds, morning fish markets, and distinct regional takes on ramen and burgers.

Arrival shortcut

Take the Hakodate Airport Shuttle Bus straight to Hakodate Station in 20 minutes for ¥500. Taxis cost four times as much for a negligible time saving.

Ropeway timing trick

Board the Mount Hakodate Ropeway 45 minutes before sunset to beat the tour bus surges. The observation deck fills completely by twilight.

food

Squid, Shio Ramen, and Pierrot

Hakodate food relies entirely on fresh coastal catches and distinct local traditions. Raw squid (surume ika) is the city's signature harvest, served translucent and cut into thin threads at morning stalls. Local ramen stands serve clear kelp-and-chicken broth called Hakodate Shio Ramen, which contrasts sharply with Sapporo's heavy miso style. The area also features its own fast-food ecosystem via Lucky Pierrot, a privately owned local burger chain that outperforms national outlets in regional sales.

history

A short history

Hakodate grew from a small fishing port into Japan's initial window to the West. Following the 1854 Treaty of Kanagawa, it became one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade, bringing diplomats, merchants, and Western architecture. The city also served as the final battlefield of the Boshin War, where samurai loyalists established the short-lived Republic of Ezo at Goryokaku before surrendering to Imperial forces in 1869.

Hakodate is best navigated using its two-line municipal tram system (Lines 2 and 5). The lines share tracks between Hakodate Station and Jujigai before splitting toward different terminals. Buses handle routes up Mount Hakodate and out to regional parks, while main sights inside the city center remain easy to walk between.

  • Suica, Pasmo, and Kitaca IC cards are accepted at front and rear tram doors.

  • Enter streetcars through the middle or rear door, then pay or tap at the front driver door when exiting.
