A short history
Hangzhou expanded rapidly as the southern terminus of the Grand Canal. When the Southern Song dynasty made Lin'an (Hangzhou) its capital in 1138, the city became an imperial center of trade and culture. Marco Polo visited in the late 13th century, writing about its paved streets and trade guilds. Today, the city serves as China's primary hub for e-commerce and digital payment tech.
