Mielno

Mielno occupies a narrow spit of sand with sea waves on its north side and calm lake water on its south. July and August turn its pedestrian strip into a loud, crowded party corridor for partygoers from western Poland. Winter strips the town bare, leaving quiet beaches and cold-water swimmers who gather every February. You can walk from the salt water to the fresh water in ten minutes flat.

Dining in Mielno splits along geographic lines. On the Baltic front, order hot fish from beachside smokehouses where alder smoke burns from dawn. On Lake Jamno's side, sit for freshwater perch and zander. Avoid places displaying generic frozen fish lists; look for smokehouses with timber racks operating behind the counter.

Mielno developed as a Slavic fishing settlement on the sand spit between Lake Jamno and the Baltic Sea. By the late 19th century, German holidaymakers transformed it into Gross Mölln, building sea baths and sanatoriums. Post-1945 border shifts brought Polish settlers, turning Mielno into a major trade union resort town before its 21st-century shift to seasonal mass tourism.

Choose your base by sound tolerance and salt preference. Mielno Centrum keeps you steps from bars and main beach access, but sleep requires earplugs in July. Unieście offers quieter nights and direct smokehouse access. The Jamno lakefront suits sailors and kayakers who prefer freshwater sunsets.

Mielno has no commercial airport. Most travellers arrive via Koszalin train station (12 km away). In summer, regional train operator Polregio runs frequent 15-minute railbuses connecting Koszalin main station to Mielno Koszalińskie. On foot, Mielno is flat and compact, while bicycles cover the spit best along marked pine forest tracks.
