A short history
Santa Fe was established in 1610 as the capital of Spanish New Mexico. Pueblo peoples revolted in 1680 and expelled Spanish settlers for twelve years. The city returned to Spanish control in 1692, later becoming part of Mexico in 1821 and the United States in 1848. Strict city ordinances enacted in 1957 required all central structures to conform to traditional Pueblo Revival and Territorial architectural styles.
