A short history
Chartered in 1763, Stowe spent its first century as a farming and lumber town. By the mid-1800s, visitors traveled by stagecoach to stay at Mount Mansfield Hotel. In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps cut the first ski trails on Mount Mansfield, establishing Stowe as a premier eastern winter destination.

A personal or rental car is the main way to travel to and around Stowe. During winter, Green Mountain Transit operates a free seasonal shuttle connecting the village to Stowe Mountain Resort along Route 108.
