“A hugely disappointing stay, memorable for all the wrong reasons.”
The room was clean and comfortable and the staff were very good, but my enthusiasm dropped the moment we entered the rear car park and saw a kitchen staff member in a filthy uniform smoking a vape; the hallway was dirty and the stairs leading to our room were scruffy, so if we hadn’t already paid we would have left; we had heard the chef patron came from a lineage of great chefs in Leeds, so we expected the food to redeem us (provided the dirty staff member didn’t influence it), yet the fish dish was bland, the steak pie next evening was dry, my husband—who is vegetarian—could only choose between risotto from the main menu or a falafel burger from the specials board, the falafel burger was acceptable but he was served a chopped-up version for his vegetarian breakfast for three mornings until they ran out, after which they gave him halloumi; the falafel burger was never replaced with another vegetarian option, so the only choice for the rest of the week was risotto; waiting 45 minutes for breakfast twice made us dislike the place, and a string of mediocre meals sealed the deal—while a stay isn’t all about food, when you market yourself as a great chef that’s what we expect.
“Beautiful Pub/Hotel/Restaurant in glorious moorland surroundings”
I’ve stayed here before and plan to return. Even on a mid‑week night the hotel was full, the restaurant bustling and looked successful, which is a good sign. We did have to wait a little in the restaurant, but the food was freshly made and totally worth the wait.
Thanks for a comfy, enjoyable stay. The staff were welcoming and friendly, making everything pleasant. Breakfast had a good selection and was well prepared. The Royal Oak sits in a lovely village, perfect for walking and exploring.
The location was convenient, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was authentic, but the staff were very friendly yet showed little interest in guests.
“Wedding anniversary celebration.”
Homely traditional pub serving good honest food well. Accommodation comfortable clean. Staff are great at the Royal Oak. Nothing not like
