The quiet, low‑lying spot on the outskirts of town with a large lawn for sitting and resting was pleasant, the car could be parked at the house, and the metro connection was close; the hosts were very friendly.

“Je krijgt iets minder dan waar je voor betaald.”

The price and location combination was decisive for me. I needed to be in the city for a three‑day course, and free parking was a key requirement because I was traveling by car. It was obvious that no cleaning had been done for a long time; although the bedding was clean, spider webs and spiders made it clear that dust had not been touched for ages. In the bathroom there were several faults: the tap leaked, the shower temperature was not adjustable (fortunately it was warm), and the shower head was so calcified that some water jets shot sideways instead of down. If I had an arachnophobia, I would definitely not have closed my eyes with the at least eight spiders I counted. I got the impression that the owner did not pay much attention to details. The towels were clean, but it was clear that no fabric softener had been used.
