Instead of hopping around Yogyakarta, Borobudur, and Prambanan, we chose to stay near each site so we could relax more and spend more time at each location, and that decision paid off. In Prambanan we enjoyed a lovely stay at Wibowo and Heni’s Rumah Desa Homestay, tucked into a charming lane only a few blocks from the complex. We got there by Grab from Borobudur, but we could have arranged a cheaper ride through Wibowo. Wibowo and Heni were warm, friendly hosts who made us feel right at home; Wibowo’s background in the government tourism agency gave him deep knowledge of the area. We chose between two rooms and settled on the larger one—spacious, comfortable, with AC and a fan that were a relief in the 38 °C heat, plus an anti‑mosquito device that proved useful. The bathroom was clean and well stocked, and it was the only place in Indonesia we stayed that had a washlet, which we appreciated. Breakfast was plentiful and satisfying, with fresh fruit, and they were proud of their locale, offering suggestions for extra activities. On the second day at Prambanan, Wiprowo kindly dropped us off for his daily task and then picked us up, taking us to a friend’s café for kopi lewak. On the last day, Wibowo drove us to the base of Merapi and its “bunker,” a shelter used during eruptions; we saw a small eruption on the way up. He patiently answered our questions and took us on small detours that deepened our understanding of the area. Finally, he drove us to the airport, a long trip during which we stopped in Koto Gede. Tourists should plan transport to and from YIA carefully, as it’s quite far from Prambanan. Nothing negative.

After booking, we arranged airport‑to‑hotel transport, and the email replies were quick and clear, giving us peace of mind before arrival. The hotel was clean, and the food was very tasty. The entrance to the Prambanan ruins is a bit far from the hotel, but the owner offered a shuttle, which let us visit the site twice during our stay. The staff were friendly, making it a great place.

Choosing Rumah Desa homestay was the best decision we made. The owners are the kindest, gentlest, and most genuine people you could find. The room is large, clean, and the bed is comfortable and spacious. Breakfast and dinner were tasty, good, and generous. We stayed with Wibowo for four days because he kindly offered his driver service and personal guide; with him we visited Bromo mountain, waterfalls, and he finally took us to the airport. He is clever, always smiling, speaks kindly, and is a good driver. Happy to have met him.
