“Possibly the best small hotel I've ever stayed in.”
This former guest house is evolving into a top‑class hotel, with an excellent restaurant offering both breakfast and evening meals. The food was superb, the decor outstanding, and the views from the bar and library incredible. The room was nearly perfect; the only minor issue was the door on the antique wardrobe that had slipped slightly—though the room is slated for a makeover next month, so that’s already being addressed. I’ve never stayed somewhere with such classically stylish decor. The location sits at the quiet end of Oban, past the harbour, and the approach can be a bit unsettling as the road narrows into a single lane at one point, but once you arrive at Dungallan, everything is forgiven. It’s also an easy walking distance to Oban town, which is a quirky mix of dingy and beautiful, leaning more toward the beautiful. The town centre has nice restaurants, and visiting Dunollie Castle is worth it for the stunning panoramic view from the ruined keep. The staff are all lovely and chatty, very personable, and bring great craic. They seem to love their jobs, which adds to the glowing atmosphere. The breakfast ladies also serve the rooms. As a learning point for the team, there’s a fine line between attentive service and being a character; my wife noted it’s great to have friendly staff, but she didn’t want them sitting on my knee (figuratively speaking). It’s a minor thing but worth sharing, though it didn’t detract from our experience.
