“So glad I discovered this beautiful, welcoming, well-organised hostel near the centre of Bath.”
There were so many highlights, but most of all I loved the friendly, convivial atmosphere. My room (10‑bed female dorm) faced the kitchen and the cozy common room, where someone was always ready for a chat. Many of the staff are volunteers and fellow travelers, and it’s clear the hostel was designed by someone who knows what backpackers need. The location was spot‑on—a five‑minute walk from Bath Spa train station and a three‑minute walk from Bath Abbey, right in the town centre. The kitchen was clean and well‑organised, featuring eight induction stovetops, two sinks, a kettle, toaster, and microwave. They supplied spices and herbs, salt & pepper, local oat milk, tea & coffee, and food containers for packing lunches. There were trays with pre‑made stickers and a large fridge. Food waste and general recycling (including soft plastics, just wash everything first) were available. The hostel’s basement, called “The Vaults,” housed three underground cave rooms with board games, a TV, books, desks, art & sewing supplies, instruments, and a lot of personality. I highly recommend joining the WhatsApp group chat, where a social event or local recommendation is posted almost every day. The hostel is an old building with no elevator, but it has been beautifully renovated and features painted ivy decorating the corridors. The showers come with caddies, plenty of hooks, good water pressure, and quick hot water (but don’t spend too long in there!). There were three female showers, so I never had to wait long, and there’s a toilet on each floor in addition to those in the basement. When you arrive, your bed is made with a pillow, fitted sheet, and doona/blanket, and towels are free. The thick walls keep most noise out except through the windows, and free earplugs are provided. The room was dark at night thanks to light‑blocking curtains, and there’s a fan if you want. The lockers were quite small and could only be secured with fairly thick padlocks, which were available to loan from reception for a £4 deposit. The beds have power points but no reading lights, curtains, or under‑bed storage drawers. There is plenty of space under the bed, and the top bunks have shower caddies attached for small items. The beds didn’t creak, but you could feel your bunkmate moving beneath or above you. They’re planning to renovate the rooms this year, so these issues might change. I’m not sure how often they change the room codes, but the lack of a physical key could be a security concern for some. Overall, I absolutely loved this place!
