This spot sits in a charming fishing village on stilts over water, with a pier almost a kilometer long that ends in a café—great for sunsets and spotting dolphins if you’re lucky. I was the only tourist, and everyone greeted me with smiles. The room was comfy, spotless (almost new), and featured a rooftop terrace and an outdoor terrace in the shade overlooking the water and pier. The owner helped a lot, moved a couch onto my terrace, and let me borrow a good bicycle. I enjoyed lunch and two tasty Thai breakfasts. I loved it so much I stayed an extra night. I’m thrilled with this “untouristy” experience. The only issue was light leaking into my room at night through the glass door toward the owner’s house; a curtain would fix it. The other two rooms probably don’t have that door.

Being able to soak up life in this little fishing port, the kindness and availability of the locals, and the lovely hostwoman along with her family made the stay special.
